Why Staffing Association Membership and Trade Shows Matter
Staffing World 2026 was a great event and incredibly beneficial for both attendees and exhibitors. The conversations, connections and opportunities were there. Attendance was a little off, and for me it raises a question: why did fewer people show up?
Some of it may have to do with behavior change.
Why Fewer People Showed Up
Behavior change is the process of modifying habits, routines or actions over time (American Psychological Association). Once we establish a new routine, it can be surprisingly difficult to go back to the old one. Think about online shopping. Many of us used to make regular trips to the mall. Today, ordering something with a few clicks is easier, faster and more convenient (Journal of Retailing and Consumer Services). But convenience comes with a trade-off. We lose the unexpected discovery and the experience of being there.
COVID accelerated this shift across just about every part of our lives. We got comfortable working remotely, meeting on Teams and attending virtual events. Those habits stuck. And while technology has made many things easier, it may also have made it easier to skip the very experiences that help build stronger businesses.
I think we’re seeing some of the same pattern show up in staffing association membership and trade shows.
Why Staffing Association Membership and Trade Shows Still Matter
Membership in staffing associations matters. Associations provide education, industry connections and opportunities to learn from people who understand our business. Just as importantly, they give our industry a collective voice. When legislation threatens staffing companies, a unified association can advocate on our behalf. Elected officials pay attention to organized groups of constituents and voters. The more engaged our industry is, the stronger that voice can be.
Membership dues help fund that work. Participation makes it stronger. We cannot expect associations to fight for our interests, provide valuable education and create meaningful networking opportunities if we are unwilling to support them.
And trade shows? They still matter in 2026.
You can send an email, schedule a video call or exchange messages on LinkedIn. Those are valuable tools. But nothing quite replaces a face-to-face conversation, a handshake, an introduction from a mutual contact or an idea that comes out of an unplanned discussion in the hallway.
We are in the people business. Relationships drive staffing, the same way they drive the networking strategies for staffing firms that keep a pipeline full. Trust drives business. And relationships are built by showing up.
Make Showing Up a Habit Again
Changing a habit takes effort. Maybe the challenge for all of us is to make participation in our industry a habit again. Join the association. Attend the conference. Walk the trade show floor. Have lunch with someone you have only known through email.
The return on that investment may be greater than we think. Sometimes, the best business opportunities come from simply being in the room. It’s the same reason Madison Resources still shows up at Staffing World and the regional shows every year: the payroll funding relationships that matter most are the ones built in person, not just over email. Staffing association membership and trade shows will keep paying off for the firms willing to show up for them.
