Maine Reporting Pay Law: What Employers Need to Know

At Madison Resources, we’re dedicated to supporting staffing firms by providing timely legislative insights, practical guidance, and resources that help you stay informed and compliant.

On June 24, 2025, Maine Governor Janet Mills signed into law LD 598, which is an act that requires certain Maine employers to pay employees if they reduce or cancel work hours in scheduled shifts, that will go into effect on September 24, 2025.

What does this mean for you?

Covered employers must provide compensation to employees that report to work but have their work hours reduced or canceled by their employer, under LD 598. Covered employers are those that employ at least 10 employees for more than 120 days in a calendar year.

The amount of compensation required is the lesser of two hours’ worth of pay at the employee’s regular rate of pay or the total pay for the shift that was initially scheduled under the bill.

Employers do not need to provide compensation if they make a good faith effort to notify the employee not to report to work, under the bill. However, compensation is required if the employer is unsuccessful in notifying the employee, the employee reports to work, and the employer has no duties to give the employee.

Employers also do not need to provide compensation if employees are not required to work or are unable to work due to adverse weather conditions, natural disasters, civil emergencies, illness, or workplace injury.

As always, we recommend speaking with your attorney, CPA or industry professional for further guidance.
